Award-winning artist Kumari Nahappan is loved for her public sculptures of local fruits and seeds. Her saga “love” seed, nutmeg and popular chillies are sited in Changi Airport, Orchard Road, National Museum and other city spaces.
Her chillies often assume human personalities and pursuits. The Tango is part of the ‘Song & Dance’ series. The 6.3 metre Tango was selected at Shanghai Art Fair. It was nominated and awarded as the Sculpture of the Year for 2011. This chilli pair have their bodies entwined in a gancho – the famous “leg wrap” gesture of the Tango dance. Exuberant and sensual, the Chilli-Tango is also a metaphor for life’s significant relationships – requiring a dynamic mix of discipline, stamina, improvisation and spontaneity. To beautifully “tango” with a partner is then to move as one, in rhythm and with mutual trust and passion for life.
